NDP07

This is home, truly
Where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me
Where that river always flows
This is home, Surely
As my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone
For this is where I know its home
- Home(chorus) by the Young Voices
Paiseh Paiseh.. cannot stand up for Singapore.. I feel quite bai-kah'ed (paraplegic) from today's 10km stint.. Mommy dearest messaged me to wish me Happy National Day and it started off with the following "Son of Singapore..." wow I'll bet mom's more patriotic than the PAP combined(crap I shouldn't have said that.. now the Men In White will come after me).
Anyway, Happiest 42nd Birthday my Island home.. Count on me Singapore :)

Diarrhoea

Well done kenchin.. you drank 900mL of no-fat milk to get protein for body repair.. and guess what.. YOU'RE BLOODY LACTOSE INTOLERANT! HOW BLOODY BRILLIANT YOU ARE! my stomach hurts now.. yet today I just caught the first glimpse.. on my ACCURATELY ZEROED weighing scale.. today is the day the needle broke the 80kg mark.. and tipped to a shy 79.. and to reward my aching body, I decided to celebrate by drinking milk to replenish my fatigued carcass.. strangely it the aching seems to go away.. but my stomach hurts like heaven now..

Its the first signs of effect since I took on my 10km running scheme.. initially I was really disenchanted by the fact that there really was no result.. but I guess, persistence really pays off.. Another 9 more kg to go and 20km to train.. Someone once told me: "The difference between a winner and a loser isn't a lack of skill.. but rather.. a lack of will." I must really be disciplined and finish it off well..

Anyway, went for a Seminar at Bio21 today with James and Bernard (Da MENSA team Prez..) about TGF-beta signalling and cancer developement.. I fell asleep.. and James had to wake me up.. man I should really get myself screened for narcolepsy.. but the guy was speaking with a very strong china accent! it was so so very thick! at least Prof. Cheng from HK is much more audible- his "Insai de seow and ousai de seow"- "inside the cell and outside the cell".. and then this indian dude with a very thick indian accent asked questions.. and it was JUST SO AMUSING! cos they both sounded so funny.. I tried my best not to laugh! I really did! oh well..

My guts still hurt bad.. and I got 8am class again tomorrow.. VERDAMMTE SCHEISSE!

Meh time to go to ~*lalaland*~

Anyway,

MAJULAH SINGAPURA!

Happy Birthday (soon) to my Sunny Little Island Paradise.. :P Yes Kay Weng, the 5 stars of the Singapore flag represent what u'll see after you tell another Singapore Joke in the presence of Singaporeans!- regardless whether M'sians are present with the Singaporeans or not.. even without Singaporeans around :P haha kidding.. We love M'sia too :) especially the pirated DVDs :P Malaysia Rocks too!
Another day, another 10km.. Went to GNC today for Glucosamine cos my joints are hurting already.. Spoke to the sports nutritionist and he said to me- "DIET IS THE KEY" I now know that eating carbs at dinnertime is a nono- my dinner should just be vege(dammit!) and meats (yayness!) and before I sleep, eat cooked egg whites- to allow my body to absorb the protein and allow body repair whilst I sleep. The new golden rule is- no carbs after 2pm. All carbs must be wholemeal and low GI... I'll have to say goodbye to white rice (sob sob) and hello to brown or bismati rice.. well I actually like bismati- especially with curry :)

I have no choice, it has to happen this way.. I don't like to put myself thru this.. but then again.. I dont have to like it.. I just have to do it.. I guess there're many things in life that we don't like to do (ESPECIALLY STUDY) but we have to do it still because its the right thing to do. With that said, I must discipline myself to do it.. to put my heart and soul into it. Nothing is more convincing than success, more imperative than victory.. Its not so dramatic as- "I'll get there or die trying".. but rather "I can do it.. I believe I can make a difference to myself".

I was thinking of the impending end of the year.. and I forsee that it'll be sad to part company with many who will be going their seperate ways- especially the OCFers.. I try not to be emo but.. looking back at all the fun and laughter we had.. it'll be hard to accept that we'll be parting company soon.. what will become of me when "Best Friend" *ching!* "Maria" goes home? and what abt Ruthie? I can no longer tease them about the legislation/jurisdiction/legal obligation/constitution/constipation.. :( what about Jason? no more garlic fried chicken that is SO VERY SINFUL.. BUT IT TASTES SO GOOD! what about JuJu? no more rubbing his head for good luck.. or making fun of mathematicians..or cheesecake.. Shera and Roy (collectively they make "Soy") are going too.. :(

But with that said.. the new faces- "Mario" and "Luigi", "Loony Tunes", Ru, Rachelle.. and strengthed/renewed bonds with other OCFers.. have brought much comfort to me.. I know my time will be up soon.. Its almost as if I'm into my final chapter here.. :) I just hope that the remainder of my time spent here will be fruitful and more bonding with the others :)

Anyway i'm off to bed :P The STUPID COLLEGE INTERNET IS SO SCREWY! I KEEP GETTING LOGGED OUT! WTH(walau thats headache!)MAN! AAAAARRGH! (ok Jason/J Lai, for a change, this entry is AGGRO!)

Deutsch

I felt a sudden inspiration to Schreiben in Deutsch.. it's been awhile..

Mein Deutsch is really going down the drain.. It took so much effort just to come up with a short paragraph..

Danach, kann ich als mein Deutsch nur eine wort sagen- Schrecklich!

Well if you can't verstehen Deutsch, this entry basically is a little exercise on Deutsch and mein conclusion that I suck at it.

Aufwiedersehen, Gute nacht, Tschüss Alles..

Superhuman

Spent 25bucks on running tights today.. Went shopping with Jon Lai for them.. and came across some that cost like 80 bucks- with some bio-acceleration technology.. I don't even know what it means! but just that it cost 80 bucks and that its very expensive- I'm not deserving of such a pair because I'm amateurish.. untill I can prove my worth... But 25 bucks really paid off.. it stuck to me like 2nd skin and even tho it trapped quite a fair bit of heat, but it protected me from abrasion.. I think thats a very good trade off.. but it felt really good.

In total I clocked 15km today- 5 in the morn due to time constraint and 10 in the evening. It felt good.. the adrenaline just running thru my veins.. someone said to me yesterday about breathing during the run- gotta train till my breathing on the run is no different from my breathing when I sleep- a natural and controlled instinct. I envisage it to be so too- I wouldn't want to be huffing and puffing like a tub of lard near the finish line.. Anyway it was a good day.. I feel delightfully tired... tho with a tinge of worry if my training would bring more harm than good- I don't want to be wearing out my joints too- especially with my weight.

I read an article from New Scientist. It was titled: "SUPERHUMAN" and I found that indeed- some people are just natural born athletes because of mutant genes giving them "mutant powers"..

-New Scientist 28 July 2007-

"Mutant Powers" from gene variants and mutations:

ACTN3- Alpha Actinin 3 gene is implicated in fast muscle fibre contraction- power athletes and sprinters are 3 times as likely to have this gene as compared to other types of athletes.

ACE- Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. The ACE-2 gene variant appears to predominate in endurance athletes and mountaineers while the ACE-DD version is found primarily in sprint athletes.

PPAR-delta- Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (Delta). This gene engineered in mice showed that they grew more slow twitch muscle fibres designed for endurance- and they could run 2x as far as normal mice.

CK-MM- Creatine Kinase (muscle isoform). Different versions of this gene can potentially affect an individual's ability at converting oxygen into energy.

Myostatin- Myostatin gene mutation prevents functional myostatin from being produced. Myostatin inhibits muscle growth- and thus a mutation in the gene allows extremely large muscles.

So there you have it.. sorry Jason.. I know its nerdy but I think that definitely I need to use evidence to back up what I say.. I thought to myself- how can it be? that such mutations can serendipitously give a person an unfair advantage over others? And as I was running in front of the mirror.. I just felt it questioning myself- am I such a person? Do I have such a power? how do I know how far I can go? how do I know how much I can take? Whilst impossible is nothing, how can you achieve the impossible without breaking apart?

I think another thing I can draw from this article is probably the obvious- the world is created to be fair- just that some are more fair than others.. you can be born with innate powers and abilities.. that others just don't have.

But perhaps.. with that- that would give me more meaning to run on- to truly put myself into a challenge and uncover any true potentials- and if not, learn something new from this experience.

Well I'll end off this poorly constructed blog blabbering with the olympic creed- Citius, Altius, Fortius- which means "Faster, Higher, Stronger"- I may not be an athlete but I'll keep this creed in my heart everyday when I run.. As for the rest of you reading this entry- I do suggest drawing your own conclusions about the information that I presented- just in a deeper sense of things :)

Day in school

Woke up today- felt like a paraplegic in bed.. aching from that 10km and low carbohydrate dinner I had.. this further exacerbated by the cushy softness of the sandwich of quilts that encased me snugly. Had cereals for brekky- and just as an indulgence, an All Natural Bar- Nut Delight, to go down with the whole mix and It definitely went down well :)

It was an OK day.. went to school.. an my earphones screwed up on me.. got abit edgy. The meeting with Beverly (the Senior Biochem Tutor) which all Miniproject students had to go to was utterly useless- well not totally but I was thinking that that coulda meant another 1hr of sleep for me! It woulda meant so much more useful! By some serendipitous chance, I met Rachelle wandering around union house and I accompanied her for lunch- it was funny how she was so scared of the pidgeons walking around- we decided to dine (what a word to use when eating out of take away plastic containers) al fresco- as there were no seats available inside. In the process we met Bing who just happened to be quite preoccupied.. he didn't seem like he wanted to talk much or at least was in a hurry.. oh well..

After lunch with Rachelle, I took off to Bio21 to meet Nick my supervisor and my partner Suh and I had this really long and draggy introduction to the technicalities of our project- working on MHC class I peptides by using ESI-TOF / HPLC-MS-MS-TOF / QqTOF and many other acronyms which sound cool to tell your prospective parent-in-laws about.. well maybe they'll smack u after that.. hahaa.. I mean theres like FT-ICR-MS or Fourier Transform (the mode of analysis) Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (just measuring like the spin of ions to determine their mass.. I mean.. WHAT THE DEVIL?! Suh and I just stood there stoned... overwhelmed by the density and the gravity of the information (Ok Juwen don't lecture me about the technicalities of these 2 terms!) Thats the problem with science.. everything is so damm long that we have to shorten it to Acronyms that sound just as ridiculously complex! Now, the proper term for 'Asthma' is coined- 'Bronchial Hyperreactivity due to Inflammation in Response to Diverse Stimuli' Thats the proper term for it.. Sigh.. Ok maybe I shouldn't complain- things could be worse.. I wouldn't want to be tallying accounts for the rest of my life or doing mathematics (Sorry Juwen =P)

Anyway I'm off.. needa get my fix of endorphins again :) My neurons want to hit some really good shit- Put on my runners and rise to the challenge!

Oh yes before I forget,

CONGRATULATIONS TO JON LAI FOR UPDATING HIS BLOG!
