Fattenator

On Behalf of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,
A Creation of KENCHIN LAB

=THE FATTENATOR=

200g butter

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

2 cups sifted plain flour

2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp Vanilla essence

2 cups Crunchy Nut cereal

Macadamia Nuts

Wallnuts

Chocolate chips

Active Ingredient: 100% w/v TLC (Tender Loving Care)

1. Melt butter and cream it into flour and sugar GRADUALLY(ie. don't add it all at one shot-makes the job easier) to get a stiff dough mix

2. Use your hands to knead the dough thoroughly

3. Add Vanilla essence and continue mixing

4. Depending on how fat you want to make your friends or how fast u want them to get diabetes, add a corresponding quantity of Macadamia, Wallnuts and Choc Chips and mix

5. With cupped hands, roll them into little balls and placed them on a bake paper lined tray with sufficient space

6. Bake for 15min

7. Remove and cool on a rack

8. Search for your skinny friends and give it to them on the pretext of goodwill..

9. Laugh at them after they eaten it

10. If it doesn't work, repeat steps 1-9 again..

I feel like I've achieved something today.. I did my own alterations to a cookie mix recipe and the end result turned out to be quite successful- a cookie that has a crunchy crust but a soft fluffy fluffy interior impregnated with treasures to increase one's "prosperity" aka. adiposity.. great sabotage for skinny people :)

Anyway, I'm feeling better today.. after a day of doing my scientific paper readings in the library, I decided to reward myself with a baking time.. It was a nice and warm sunny day.. this's the final week of winter- I guess a good omen: cold and miserable times dont last.. warm and sunshine filled days are up ahead.. thats something really to look forward to..

Heard a 25yr old army Captain- OCS platoon commander, died of a heart attack after running the Army Half Marathon the other day.. collapsing at the finish line of the race.. I feel most sorry for him.. and for his family.. yet.. if I could have one wish, I would want to go into his mind and see his thoughts thru the whole run.. what could have motivated a person to run so hard- even to the point of his own demise? what was he thinking? how did he feel? why did he do it? I guess the most important question to me is- what drove him?

As wierd as it may sound, I admire this person.. I am inspired by him.. and I trully wish he didn't have to pay the price of his pursuit with his life.. Whilst many would call it sheer stupidity and foolishness.. I feel that his courage and perseverance was truly uncommon.. he so willingly endured it even to the point of death... he must have believed in something or had a dream to achieve.. if it was a matter of fitness, he wouldn't have collapsed at the finish line.. It kinda fits the story of how the marathon came about in the first place.. the Greeks were fighting against some other bad people at a place called Marathon and they defeated the bad guys.. so they sent a runner to return to the king to bring the good news.. the runner ran for 4 days and when he reached, he brought the message of victory, then he collapsed and died.. quite strange isnt it?

At least what I want to extract from this really unfortunate mishap is a lesson on resolve.. and determination.. and also at the same time.. balance it out with knowing limits.. and listening carefully to your body.. determination and a resolve of steel.. yet modulating that with prudence.. like they say: Passion gets you there.. Obsession gets you killed.. I want to apply this paradigm into my studies and life..

It will be my turn at the end of the year to run the Standard Chartered half marathon- 21km.. as trivial as it may sound, it is a dream to me.. something I have been and am training for.. to show myself that I can do it if I just put my heart to it... and to hang on even tho its tough.. it is an experience that I want.. to me, 21km doesn't decide who's faster or not- it tests one's endurance.. and the winners are those who cross the finishing line regardless of timing- because the victory is in conquering yourself and hauling your ass across the finish line..

I'll make sure by the end of the year I'll at least be able to haul my ass across the finish line...

Saturday

Spent my day with autoimmune diseases.. anything from RA to SLE to SS to anything else that you could spell acronymize and were just too lazy to say out loud.. yet the thought still lingered at the back of my mind.. its a strange feeling of weakness.. a sense of emptiness.. somehow I wish someone could talk to me right now.. yet.. I wouldn't know what to say or how to describe my predicament.. if someone so serendipitously did come my way.. nevertheless I hope someone would..

Its almost as if I'm putting out a distress signal but covering it with a cloth.. making it as subtle as possible... perhaps ashamed to feel weak.. embarased.. but nevertheless.. I can't run from what I feel or think..

I just guess I'm good at covering up my emotions.. by smiling and being a bloody joker.. yet somehow I wish people really knew what I thought or felt inside.. oh well..

At least one thing I can say I accomplished today was eating broccoli with mushroom and beef stir fry style.. with a dash of chinese cooking wine.. well done kenchin.. at least u did something well this week..

emo

I know I'm abit too old but.. I'm really eyeing these models!!!... but they'll probably be out of stock by the time I get back :( The 1st one (Navy Seal SOCOM) is probably out of stock.. it was limited edition..
Its been a long day for me and just alot of thoughts running thru my head.. the past few weeks has precipitated many thoughts in my head by which means that this entry's gonna be emo.. and I mean.. I guess serious in nature.. I know it isnt the usually entertaining entry but nonetheless I feel that it is imperative that I spend some time reflecting my innermost thoughts albeit abit cryptic.. you can also talk to me in person..
Another week's gone by which the tinge of melancholy like the drizzling rain.. I feel tired but its no excuse for me.. there're many others who're tired too.. and I am not entitled any exclusive rights to complain.. but I do.. damm my weakness.. A gift I realise also to be a weakness.. and once again.. the spectres of my past return to hunt me.. bidding me to yield..
I know it hurts... but sometimes doing the right thing requires biting the bullet.. I forsee somethings to happen.. in my minds eye a flow chart of possibilities.. but as in science.. some evidences strongly suggests some very apparent rammifications.. It hurts but.. I must do the right thing.. for my own sake, for the sake of others and for the sake of unity.. I know I should feel joy for others.. but with a tinge of sadness in the process... a bittersweet feeling.. but sorta like lindt 80% cocoa.. when the bitter is far more potent that the sweet.. but.. its necessary(figuratively speaking.. dark chox is very rich in anti-oxidants which protect from free-radical damage/oxidative stress)..
I guess its a learning process for me.. just another tutorial in learning how to shut out my emotions..emotions, thoughts, like autoimmune disease- your body's defence can turn against you and in turn destroy you.. I hope I can find comfort.. and continue my course of action regardless of what I feel... to give happiness to others.. and in that manner, find my on happiness.. instead of feeling sorry for myself..
I feel conflict in myself.. its difficult.. and sometimes painful in a sense.. but something tells me it is the right thing to do.. and I can't shake off that feeling.. tho its so hard to do.. or to watch some things happening right before your eyes.. but.. its the right thing to do.. and I must do it..
The name "Kenneth" is of Gaelic origin.. meaning "Gracious, manly" and perhaps I haven't lived up to my own name.. by being gracious to others.. perhaps thats where the damage is coming from..
Sigh.. I think I've said too much.. yet it feels like I've too much more to say.. I feel sorry for myself and I shouldn't be.. I just hope in time that I'll forget it..
I do apologise that this is a very emo-loaded entry.. its the feeling that I havent had enough emo fibre and the emo-constipation(emostipation?) is malignant.. I had to get it out of my system.. but yeah.. I'll call it a day.. I'm tired..
I'll do what is right.. because its right..

Haikus

This is my horoscope for today... as taken from friendster horoscope..

Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

The Bottom Line
Your jovial nature is out in full force, and it will make you a few new friends.

In Detail
Your jovial nature is out in full force today, so you should celebrate it! Your glorious sense of humor will get you noticed -- and make you a few new friends. Whenever you hear a witty quip in your head, don't wait too long before speaking it aloud. Timing is everything in humor, as it often is in life -- let yourself go with the flow, and try not to edit what you say too much. It's easy for people to forgive an unusual or risky comment when they are laughing their heads off.

.. or when they're ripping mine off....I conclude that I should just shut up.... seems that saying too much isn't helping at all..

Haikus are cliche
Lydia says they're edible
I feel like some now
This one's dedicated to Sir Datok Choy Kay Weng
"You use Google Earth..
And you can't see Singapore"
Kay Weng is funny
Yes I obviously lack creativity.. I was about to put up pictures of flowers that I took yesterday.. but realised that Bing had done that for his blog entry too.. so I must try to be abit more creative.... but really do go try out Google Earth.. and see for yourself

Haiku

I was really bored
I wrote this random haiku
I feel like ice cream

Library Law
Guess what? The comps at the Law Library have GOOGLE EARTH.. but UNFORTUNATELY there was no Haze.. and I could actually see my own house from there.. 79 West Coast Green.. So I decided to go on a fact finding mission- I typed in Mentakab.. and the camera panned.. and all I saw was a splotch of green.. you cant zoom in much.. I guess Kay Weng was right.. and in fact Mentakab is on Wikipedia.. hmm.. very interesting.. there're alot of trees there.. so much for my amusement today.
Slept for only an hour last night from 6-7am.. I feel the fatigue just setting in but.. I guess there's really not much of a choice.. I gotta carry out my responsibility.. and being responsible often means doing the stuff that you dont like.. I guess thats the way life is isnt it? No one asked you if you liked it and you are under no obligation to like it.. but you just have to do it.. I'm in quite a dour mood today.. there're many things going on- academia and otherwise.. but as dour as I am, I just guess I'll laugh or at least try and let it pass.. Isn't that the way life is? it insults you time and time again.. but just shrug it off.. infact you insult yourself and get a laugh out of it too.. a transgression of mine is probably that I've imposed my own standards on others... my own stoic attitude towards life.. well I know for one I've tresspassed Ju wen... I didn't get it at the point of time.. I actually still dont.. but.. some things in life are probably best not understood but just done.. so I'll do my bit..
Its an unusually quiet day today.. although the sun in all its splendour smiled upon me.. but I just couldn't help this feeling inside me.. As I walked out from home the second time, all of a sudden.. its like such a surreally beautiful day but with a tinge of melancholy.. I dont know why I felt that way.. but I just did.. thoughts so elusive playing hit and run with me.. could it be I'm just tired? could it be that I've suppressed so much of my emotion that its starting to turn on me? Its the kind of feeling when you have a cut in the middle of your palm.. whilst it isnt inherently lethal, you feel it there and it annoys you.. I feel edgy.. and some low on morale.. I look at my books with a sigh more than my usual 'can-do'.. its like something is sucking my energy.. and I doubt its just the lack of sleep- because I've gone without sleep before and I felt fine..
Oh well.. I guess a start would be to quit whining and to get on with my work..

NDP07

This is home, truly
Where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me
Where that river always flows
This is home, Surely
As my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone
For this is where I know its home
- Home(chorus) by the Young Voices
Paiseh Paiseh.. cannot stand up for Singapore.. I feel quite bai-kah'ed (paraplegic) from today's 10km stint.. Mommy dearest messaged me to wish me Happy National Day and it started off with the following "Son of Singapore..." wow I'll bet mom's more patriotic than the PAP combined(crap I shouldn't have said that.. now the Men In White will come after me).
Anyway, Happiest 42nd Birthday my Island home.. Count on me Singapore :)

Diarrhoea

Well done kenchin.. you drank 900mL of no-fat milk to get protein for body repair.. and guess what.. YOU'RE BLOODY LACTOSE INTOLERANT! HOW BLOODY BRILLIANT YOU ARE! my stomach hurts now.. yet today I just caught the first glimpse.. on my ACCURATELY ZEROED weighing scale.. today is the day the needle broke the 80kg mark.. and tipped to a shy 79.. and to reward my aching body, I decided to celebrate by drinking milk to replenish my fatigued carcass.. strangely it the aching seems to go away.. but my stomach hurts like heaven now..

Its the first signs of effect since I took on my 10km running scheme.. initially I was really disenchanted by the fact that there really was no result.. but I guess, persistence really pays off.. Another 9 more kg to go and 20km to train.. Someone once told me: "The difference between a winner and a loser isn't a lack of skill.. but rather.. a lack of will." I must really be disciplined and finish it off well..

Anyway, went for a Seminar at Bio21 today with James and Bernard (Da MENSA team Prez..) about TGF-beta signalling and cancer developement.. I fell asleep.. and James had to wake me up.. man I should really get myself screened for narcolepsy.. but the guy was speaking with a very strong china accent! it was so so very thick! at least Prof. Cheng from HK is much more audible- his "Insai de seow and ousai de seow"- "inside the cell and outside the cell".. and then this indian dude with a very thick indian accent asked questions.. and it was JUST SO AMUSING! cos they both sounded so funny.. I tried my best not to laugh! I really did! oh well..

My guts still hurt bad.. and I got 8am class again tomorrow.. VERDAMMTE SCHEISSE!

Meh time to go to ~*lalaland*~

Anyway,

MAJULAH SINGAPURA!

Happy Birthday (soon) to my Sunny Little Island Paradise.. :P Yes Kay Weng, the 5 stars of the Singapore flag represent what u'll see after you tell another Singapore Joke in the presence of Singaporeans!- regardless whether M'sians are present with the Singaporeans or not.. even without Singaporeans around :P haha kidding.. We love M'sia too :) especially the pirated DVDs :P Malaysia Rocks too!
Another day, another 10km.. Went to GNC today for Glucosamine cos my joints are hurting already.. Spoke to the sports nutritionist and he said to me- "DIET IS THE KEY" I now know that eating carbs at dinnertime is a nono- my dinner should just be vege(dammit!) and meats (yayness!) and before I sleep, eat cooked egg whites- to allow my body to absorb the protein and allow body repair whilst I sleep. The new golden rule is- no carbs after 2pm. All carbs must be wholemeal and low GI... I'll have to say goodbye to white rice (sob sob) and hello to brown or bismati rice.. well I actually like bismati- especially with curry :)

I have no choice, it has to happen this way.. I don't like to put myself thru this.. but then again.. I dont have to like it.. I just have to do it.. I guess there're many things in life that we don't like to do (ESPECIALLY STUDY) but we have to do it still because its the right thing to do. With that said, I must discipline myself to do it.. to put my heart and soul into it. Nothing is more convincing than success, more imperative than victory.. Its not so dramatic as- "I'll get there or die trying".. but rather "I can do it.. I believe I can make a difference to myself".

I was thinking of the impending end of the year.. and I forsee that it'll be sad to part company with many who will be going their seperate ways- especially the OCFers.. I try not to be emo but.. looking back at all the fun and laughter we had.. it'll be hard to accept that we'll be parting company soon.. what will become of me when "Best Friend" *ching!* "Maria" goes home? and what abt Ruthie? I can no longer tease them about the legislation/jurisdiction/legal obligation/constitution/constipation.. :( what about Jason? no more garlic fried chicken that is SO VERY SINFUL.. BUT IT TASTES SO GOOD! what about JuJu? no more rubbing his head for good luck.. or making fun of mathematicians..or cheesecake.. Shera and Roy (collectively they make "Soy") are going too.. :(

But with that said.. the new faces- "Mario" and "Luigi", "Loony Tunes", Ru, Rachelle.. and strengthed/renewed bonds with other OCFers.. have brought much comfort to me.. I know my time will be up soon.. Its almost as if I'm into my final chapter here.. :) I just hope that the remainder of my time spent here will be fruitful and more bonding with the others :)

Anyway i'm off to bed :P The STUPID COLLEGE INTERNET IS SO SCREWY! I KEEP GETTING LOGGED OUT! WTH(walau thats headache!)MAN! AAAAARRGH! (ok Jason/J Lai, for a change, this entry is AGGRO!)

Deutsch

I felt a sudden inspiration to Schreiben in Deutsch.. it's been awhile..

Mein Deutsch is really going down the drain.. It took so much effort just to come up with a short paragraph..

Danach, kann ich als mein Deutsch nur eine wort sagen- Schrecklich!

Well if you can't verstehen Deutsch, this entry basically is a little exercise on Deutsch and mein conclusion that I suck at it.

Aufwiedersehen, Gute nacht, Tschüss Alles..

Superhuman

Spent 25bucks on running tights today.. Went shopping with Jon Lai for them.. and came across some that cost like 80 bucks- with some bio-acceleration technology.. I don't even know what it means! but just that it cost 80 bucks and that its very expensive- I'm not deserving of such a pair because I'm amateurish.. untill I can prove my worth... But 25 bucks really paid off.. it stuck to me like 2nd skin and even tho it trapped quite a fair bit of heat, but it protected me from abrasion.. I think thats a very good trade off.. but it felt really good.

In total I clocked 15km today- 5 in the morn due to time constraint and 10 in the evening. It felt good.. the adrenaline just running thru my veins.. someone said to me yesterday about breathing during the run- gotta train till my breathing on the run is no different from my breathing when I sleep- a natural and controlled instinct. I envisage it to be so too- I wouldn't want to be huffing and puffing like a tub of lard near the finish line.. Anyway it was a good day.. I feel delightfully tired... tho with a tinge of worry if my training would bring more harm than good- I don't want to be wearing out my joints too- especially with my weight.

I read an article from New Scientist. It was titled: "SUPERHUMAN" and I found that indeed- some people are just natural born athletes because of mutant genes giving them "mutant powers"..

-New Scientist 28 July 2007-

"Mutant Powers" from gene variants and mutations:

ACTN3- Alpha Actinin 3 gene is implicated in fast muscle fibre contraction- power athletes and sprinters are 3 times as likely to have this gene as compared to other types of athletes.

ACE- Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. The ACE-2 gene variant appears to predominate in endurance athletes and mountaineers while the ACE-DD version is found primarily in sprint athletes.

PPAR-delta- Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (Delta). This gene engineered in mice showed that they grew more slow twitch muscle fibres designed for endurance- and they could run 2x as far as normal mice.

CK-MM- Creatine Kinase (muscle isoform). Different versions of this gene can potentially affect an individual's ability at converting oxygen into energy.

Myostatin- Myostatin gene mutation prevents functional myostatin from being produced. Myostatin inhibits muscle growth- and thus a mutation in the gene allows extremely large muscles.

So there you have it.. sorry Jason.. I know its nerdy but I think that definitely I need to use evidence to back up what I say.. I thought to myself- how can it be? that such mutations can serendipitously give a person an unfair advantage over others? And as I was running in front of the mirror.. I just felt it questioning myself- am I such a person? Do I have such a power? how do I know how far I can go? how do I know how much I can take? Whilst impossible is nothing, how can you achieve the impossible without breaking apart?

I think another thing I can draw from this article is probably the obvious- the world is created to be fair- just that some are more fair than others.. you can be born with innate powers and abilities.. that others just don't have.

But perhaps.. with that- that would give me more meaning to run on- to truly put myself into a challenge and uncover any true potentials- and if not, learn something new from this experience.

Well I'll end off this poorly constructed blog blabbering with the olympic creed- Citius, Altius, Fortius- which means "Faster, Higher, Stronger"- I may not be an athlete but I'll keep this creed in my heart everyday when I run.. As for the rest of you reading this entry- I do suggest drawing your own conclusions about the information that I presented- just in a deeper sense of things :)

Day in school

Woke up today- felt like a paraplegic in bed.. aching from that 10km and low carbohydrate dinner I had.. this further exacerbated by the cushy softness of the sandwich of quilts that encased me snugly. Had cereals for brekky- and just as an indulgence, an All Natural Bar- Nut Delight, to go down with the whole mix and It definitely went down well :)

It was an OK day.. went to school.. an my earphones screwed up on me.. got abit edgy. The meeting with Beverly (the Senior Biochem Tutor) which all Miniproject students had to go to was utterly useless- well not totally but I was thinking that that coulda meant another 1hr of sleep for me! It woulda meant so much more useful! By some serendipitous chance, I met Rachelle wandering around union house and I accompanied her for lunch- it was funny how she was so scared of the pidgeons walking around- we decided to dine (what a word to use when eating out of take away plastic containers) al fresco- as there were no seats available inside. In the process we met Bing who just happened to be quite preoccupied.. he didn't seem like he wanted to talk much or at least was in a hurry.. oh well..

After lunch with Rachelle, I took off to Bio21 to meet Nick my supervisor and my partner Suh and I had this really long and draggy introduction to the technicalities of our project- working on MHC class I peptides by using ESI-TOF / HPLC-MS-MS-TOF / QqTOF and many other acronyms which sound cool to tell your prospective parent-in-laws about.. well maybe they'll smack u after that.. hahaa.. I mean theres like FT-ICR-MS or Fourier Transform (the mode of analysis) Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (just measuring like the spin of ions to determine their mass.. I mean.. WHAT THE DEVIL?! Suh and I just stood there stoned... overwhelmed by the density and the gravity of the information (Ok Juwen don't lecture me about the technicalities of these 2 terms!) Thats the problem with science.. everything is so damm long that we have to shorten it to Acronyms that sound just as ridiculously complex! Now, the proper term for 'Asthma' is coined- 'Bronchial Hyperreactivity due to Inflammation in Response to Diverse Stimuli' Thats the proper term for it.. Sigh.. Ok maybe I shouldn't complain- things could be worse.. I wouldn't want to be tallying accounts for the rest of my life or doing mathematics (Sorry Juwen =P)

Anyway I'm off.. needa get my fix of endorphins again :) My neurons want to hit some really good shit- Put on my runners and rise to the challenge!

Oh yes before I forget,

CONGRATULATIONS TO JON LAI FOR UPDATING HIS BLOG!
